AC Not Cooling? Check These Things Before You Call Anyone
When your AC runs but the house won't cool, four things cause it more often than anything else: a dirty air filter choking the airflow, a thermostat set wrong or with dead batteries, a tripped breaker or a pulled outdoor disconnect, and an iced-over or filthy outdoor coil. The same short list applies whether you have central air, a heat pump, or a ductless mini split. Start there before you assume the worst.

The Five-Minute Checks Any Homeowner Can Do Safely
None of these need tools or training, and none of them can hurt you or the equipment. Work through them in order — a surprising number of no-cool calls end right here, before anyone picks up the phone.
1. The thermostat
Make sure it is set to COOL, and set the target a few degrees below the room temperature so the system actually calls for cooling. Set the fan to AUTO, not ON — on ON, the blower keeps running even when the system isn't cooling, and that room-temperature air feels warm at the vents. If it is a battery thermostat, swap the batteries. A weak set can make it act strangely on a hot afternoon.
2. The air filter
Pull the air filter and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, that is very likely your problem. A clogged filter starves the coil of airflow, the coil gets cold enough to freeze the condensation on it, and a block of ice blows almost no cold air into the house. Put in a clean one and give a frozen coil a few hours to thaw with the fan running before you judge it. It is not a small effect either — ENERGY STAR's maintenance checklist puts airflow problems at up to 15 percent of a system's efficiency, and it is why they tell homeowners to inspect the filter monthly.
3. The breaker and the outdoor disconnect
Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. A tripped one often sits halfway between on and off — flip it fully OFF, then back ON. There is also a pull-out disconnect box on the wall right next to the outdoor unit. If that is pulled or has tripped, the outdoor unit is dead while the indoor blower keeps pushing warm air through the house, which fools a lot of people into thinking the whole system is running fine.
4. Clearance around the outdoor unit
The outdoor unit dumps your home's heat into the yard, and it needs room to breathe to do it. Cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, mulch piled up the sides, and shrubs grown tight against the fins all choke it. Clear a couple of feet on every side, and with the power off, gently rinse the fins from the inside out with a garden hose. Do not use a pressure washer — the fins bend easily.
5. Ice on the refrigerant lines
Go look at the copper lines running to the outdoor unit and at the indoor coil if you can see it. Frost or ice anywhere on the line set or the coil means something is wrong, usually low refrigerant or that starved airflow again. Shut the system off at the thermostat and let it thaw completely. Running a unit that is iced up can send liquid back to the compressor, and that turns a modest repair into an expensive one.
What the Symptom Pattern Tells You
If the five-minute checks come up clean, the way your system misbehaves narrows down what is actually wrong. Three patterns cover most no-cool calls.
It runs but blows warm
The blower works and air moves, but nothing is cold. That trail usually leads to the refrigerant charge or the evaporator coil — a slow leak, or a coil too dirty or iced to pull heat out of the air. Neither one is a homeowner fix.
It won't keep up on 95° days
Cools fine most of the time but loses the fight at peak heat? That points to airflow or sizing. A system that is a little undersized, low on charge, or short on airflow runs flat out on the hottest afternoons and still falls a few degrees behind.
It cools some rooms, not others
One room stays hot while the rest are comfortable usually means a duct or zoning issue — a crushed or leaking duct run, a closed damper, or a room that was never balanced right for how the air gets there.
Why Southern Indiana Humidity Makes It Worse
An air conditioner does two jobs at once. It drops the air temperature, and it wrings moisture out of the air. Here in the Ohio Valley, that second job is half the battle. A muggy 88° afternoon in Southern Indiana can feel worse than a dry 95° somewhere out west, because the air is soaked and your skin can't shed heat.
That matters when a system is starting to weaken. A unit that is low on refrigerant or moving air too fast can still knock a few degrees off the thermostat while barely pulling any humidity out of the house. The number on the wall looks fine, but the place feels clammy and sticky. A system dehumidifies during long, steady run times — that is when the coil stays cold enough, long enough, to condense water and drain it away. A unit that short-cycles or races through its run never gets there.
There is a number worth knowing here. The EPA's guide to mold, moisture, and your home says to hold indoor relative humidity under 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50. A house that sits above that all summer is not just uncomfortable — it is the condition mold needs. If your AC holds the temperature but the air still feels heavy, the humidity side of the job is the part that has slipped.

When to Stop and Call Someone
The checks above are the homeowner's half of this. Past them, the work needs gauges, training, and a license — and a couple of the parts inside will hurt you if you treat them casually.
Anything involving refrigerant is off-limits without EPA Section 608 certification. That is a federal requirement under the Clean Air Act, not a suggestion, and the gas itself can cause frostbite on contact and push breathable air out of a closed space. Capacitors hold a stored charge that can bite hard even after the power is off. And the electrical side — contactors, wiring, the compressor — is where a wrong move gets someone hurt or turns a small repair into a whole new system.
So here is the line: if you have swapped the filter, checked the thermostat and the breakers, cleared out the outdoor unit, and the house still won't cool, you have done your part. That is the point to bring in someone with the tools to measure what is actually happening.

Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?

On a 95 degree afternoon the system fights far more heat than it does at night, so a unit that is slightly undersized, low on refrigerant, or short on airflow keeps up after dark but falls behind at peak heat. It is a classic sign the system has lost some capacity, not that it has died.
