HVAC System Won't Turn On? Walk Through This Before You Call
When an HVAC system goes completely dead — no hum, no click, no air — the cause is almost always lost power, not a broken machine. Before you call anyone, walk five things in order: the thermostat, the breaker panel, the outdoor disconnect box, the switch on the indoor unit that looks like a light switch, and the condensate float switch that cuts the system off when the drain backs up. Most no-power calls end at one of those five — whether you run central air, a furnace, a heat pump, or a ductless mini split.

The Five Checks, in Order
None of these need tools or take longer than a few minutes, and none of them can hurt you or the equipment. Work through them in this order — most dead-system calls end somewhere on this list, long before anyone picks up the phone.
1. Start at the thermostat
Make sure it is set to the mode you actually want — COOL or HEAT, not OFF and not fan-only — and that the target is set past the room temperature so the system truly calls for it (a few degrees below for cooling, above for heating). Then, if it is a battery thermostat, swap in fresh batteries. A dead or dying battery is the single most common reason a screen goes blank or a system just sits there doing nothing. In a mild Southern Indiana shoulder week, it is also easy for someone to bump it to OFF and forget.
2. Check the breaker panel — both breakers
An HVAC system usually has two breakers: one for the indoor air handler or furnace and one for the outdoor condenser. Look at both. Here is the part that fools people — a double-pole breaker can look ON while it is actually tripped. The handle sits in a soft, mushy middle position instead of snapping to a firm ON. Push it fully OFF, past the off stop, then back to ON so it resets cleanly. If it will not stay reset, stop right there and read the electrical section below before you try again.
3. The outdoor disconnect box
On the wall right next to the outdoor unit is a small gray or metal box — the disconnect. Some have a pull-out block, some a switch, some fuses inside. A pull-out block can work loose or get yanked, and lawn equipment or a hard freeze-thaw winter can jostle it. Make sure the block is seated firmly all the way in or the switch is flipped on. If this is pulled, the outdoor unit is dead while the indoor blower keeps running, which makes it feel like the system is working when half of it is off.
4. The indoor unit switch that looks like a light switch
Somewhere on or beside the furnace or air handler — often in a hallway, closet, or basement near the equipment — is a plain switch that looks exactly like a light switch and is usually unlabeled. It is the service switch for the whole system. People flip it off thinking it is a light and never realize it. Find it, flip it on, and give the system a minute to wake up.
5. The condensate float switch
This is the one most homeowners have never heard of. A small float sits in the drain line or drain pan, and when water cannot drain away it rises and shuts the whole system off on purpose — so it does not overflow onto your floor or ceiling. In our muggy Ohio Valley summers a cooling system pulls a lot of water out of the air, and a slow or clogged condensate drain trips that float constantly. If the system is dead in cooling weather and you spot water in the pan or a full drain line, that is the likely cause. Clearing the clog lets the float drop and the system come back — but do not bypass the float to force it running, or the next backup ends up on your floor. When It's a Furnace That Won't Fire
If the five checks come up clean and it is heat you are missing, a furnace has a couple of quirks worth knowing before you assume the worst.
The door panel is not seated
Furnaces have a safety interlock behind the front panel — a little plunger switch that keeps the burner off unless the panel is pushed in tight. If someone changed a filter and left the panel loose, or it never clicked fully home, the furnace will not light and nothing looks wrong. Press the panel firmly until it seats and the switch closes.
Ignition lockout — three strikes
Many furnaces try to light three times. Miss three in a row and the control board locks the furnace out — for about an hour, or until you cut power for a full minute and restore it. You get one clean reset: kill the power at the switch or breaker, wait, turn it back on, and let it try. If it lights, great. If it locks out again, stop forcing it. Every failed attempt dumps a little gas before it gives up, and repeatedly cycling a furnace that will not light is the wrong way to chase the problem.
If you smell gas, stop everything
This one is not a checklist item — it is a hard stop. If you smell rotten-egg or sulfur gas near the furnace, do not flip switches, do not try to light anything, and do not go looking for the source. Get everyone out of the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. A furnace that will not start is never worth chasing through a gas smell. Carbon monoxide is the other half of that warning, and it gives you no smell at all — the EPA lists back-drafting furnaces and leaking chimneys among the common household sources, which is why a working CO alarm matters in any house with gas heat.
When It's the AC or Heat Pump
Cooling equipment has its own set of reasons for sitting quiet, and a couple of them are the system doing exactly what it should.
The five-minute compressor delay
After a power blip, a thermostat change, or a breaker reset, the outdoor unit will often sit still for a few minutes on purpose. It is an anti-short-cycle delay that protects the compressor from restarting against high pressure. A unit that short cycles wears out fast, so the control makes it wait. Give it a full five minutes before you decide it is dead.
A frozen coil shutting things down
A dirty filter or low refrigerant can ice the evaporator coil into a solid block, and some systems shut down on a sensor rather than run frozen. If the unit powers on but blows warm and you find frost on the coil or the copper lines, switch the system to OFF, set the fan to ON, and let it thaw completely before running it again. Mini split remotes and mode conflicts
A ductless head that has gone silent is often the simplest fix of all: dead batteries in the remote, so the head never got the command. Swap them and try again. On a multi-zone system there is a second catch — most cannot heat one room and cool another at the same time. If one head is set to heat while another calls for cooling, the outdoor unit picks one mode and the conflicting head sits idle. Set every head to the same mode and the quiet one usually comes right back.
When It's Genuinely Electrical — Where DIY Ends
There is one signal that ends the homeowner checklist for good: a breaker that trips again the moment you reset it. That is not a nuisance trip. It means the breaker is doing its job and stopping current from flowing into a short or a ground fault. Reset it once, cleanly, as described above. If it will not hold, leave it off.
Repeatedly forcing a breaker back into a fault is a genuine fire risk — the whole point of the breaker is to interrupt current the wiring cannot safely carry, and overriding it puts heat where you do not want it. This is also why opening up the outdoor unit is not a homeowner step: capacitors inside hold a stored charge that can bite hard even with the power off and the unit unplugged. A burning smell, a loud buzzing at the outdoor unit, or a scorched contactor all land in the same place.
This is also why the electrical side sits on a professional's list rather than a homeowner's. ENERGY STAR's maintenance checklist puts tightening every electrical connection and measuring voltage and current on the motors in the pre-season check-up, and says plainly that faulty connections cause unsafe operation and cut the life of major components. Those are meter readings, not things you can eyeball.
So here is the line. If you have checked the thermostat, both breakers, the disconnect, the indoor switch, and the float, and the system still will not come to life — or a breaker keeps tripping — you have done your part safely. Everything past that needs a meter, and it is where our work starts.

Why is my thermostat blank?
A blank thermostat almost always means it lost power. If it takes batteries, put fresh ones in first — a dying battery is the most common cause of a dark screen. If it is hardwired or still blank on new batteries, the low-voltage side may have shut off: check the switch on the furnace or air handler that looks like a light switch, make sure the furnace door panel is pushed in tight, and look at the condensate float switch, which cuts the 24-volt signal when the drain backs up. A tripped breaker on the indoor unit will also leave the thermostat dead.
Why does my AC breaker keep tripping?
A breaker that trips the instant you reset it is protecting you from a real fault — a shorted capacitor, a seized compressor, or damaged wiring. Do not keep resetting it; a breaker forced back into a short can overheat. If it holds for a while and only trips on a hot afternoon, the system may be pulling too much current from a dirty coil or a weakening compressor. Either way it is pointing at a part that needs to be tested, not a switch that needs to be flipped again.
Why won't my furnace turn on even though the thermostat is set to heat?
The two most common causes are a furnace door panel that is not fully seated — a safety switch keeps the burner off until it is pushed in tight — and an ignition lockout. Many furnaces try to light three times, and after three misses they lock out for about an hour or until you cut power for a minute and restore it. A dead thermostat battery, a tripped breaker, or a clogged condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace will also keep it from firing.
How long should I wait after resetting the breaker?
Give it about five minutes before you expect the outdoor unit to start. Air conditioners and heat pumps have a built-in anti-short-cycle delay that holds the compressor off for a few minutes to protect it, so a quiet outdoor unit right after a reset is normal. If the breaker trips again during that wait, stop and leave it off — that is a fault, not a fluke, and it needs a look before anyone tries again.
