Read that as the age to start paying attention, not the age to start shopping — plenty of units well past it are still worth the repair.

Central air conditioners — 12 to 17 years

The compressor is the heart of a central AC, and it is the part that decides the system's lifespan. Every time the unit starts is the hardest moment on that compressor, so a system that runs long, steady cycles ages slower than one that snaps on and off all day. The evaporator coil and the outdoor coil matter too — kept clean, they let the compressor do its job without straining. Let them cake up with dirt and cottonwood, and the compressor pays for it.

Gas furnaces — 15 to 20+ years

Furnaces tend to outlast air conditioners because the part that ends their life — the heat exchanger — has no moving parts. It is a metal chamber that separates the flame's exhaust from the air you breathe. Over years of heating and cooling it can crack, and a cracked heat exchanger is a safety line, not a maybe-later repair. A furnace with clean burners, a fresh filter, and a sound heat exchanger can run past 20 years without complaint.

Heat pumps — 10 to 15 years

The Signs a System Is Actually Near the End

A system that is actually near the end shows a pattern, not a single bad day.
