The compressor is the pump at the heart of every air conditioner and heat pump. It squeezes refrigerant vapor to high pressure, which is what drives the refrigerant around the loop and makes moving heat possible in the first place, no compression, no cooling.

It lives in the outdoor unit, it is the hardest-working and most expensive component in the system, and its condition often decides whether an aging system is worth repairing, which is why central AC repair starts with a meter on the electricals rather than a replacement pitch. Traditional compressors run at one fixed speed, cycling on and off with demand; the inverter compressor is the variable-speed version found in modern mini splits.

What does a compressor do?

The compressor squeezes low-pressure refrigerant vapor into hot, high-pressure vapor and pushes it around the loop. That pressure difference is what lets the refrigerant absorb heat in one place and release it in another. Every other part of the system depends on it.

What causes a compressor to fail?

Low refrigerant from a leak, electrical problems like a weak capacitor forcing hard starts, dirty coils that overheat it, and short cycling that never lets it rest are the main killers. Most compressor failures are the end result of a smaller problem that ran unaddressed.

What is the difference between a standard and an inverter compressor?

A standard compressor runs at one speed, full blast or off, and cycles between the two to match demand. An inverter compressor varies its speed instead, and that difference is a big part of why modern mini splits run so efficiently.
