MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it rates how small a particle an air filter can catch. The residential scale runs from 1 to 16.
Low numbers stop dust and lint, mid-range numbers add pollen and pet dander, and the upper range catches smoke and bacteria-sized particles. Higher is not automatically better: the tighter the filter weave, the harder your blower works to pull air through it, and a system never designed for a MERV 13 filter can end up with airflow problems that cost more than the cleaner air was worth. Most homes land comfortably in the MERV 8 to 13 range.

A higher MERV filter catches more, but it also makes the blower pull air through a denser weave, which raises static pressure in systems not designed for it. The right filter balances what you want out of the air against what your equipment can breathe through.
What MERV rating should I use in my furnace?
MERV 8 to 13 covers most homes, enough filtration for dust, pollen, and pet dander without choking airflow. If allergies push you toward the top of that range, it is worth confirming your blower motor and duct design can handle the added restriction first.
