BTU (British Thermal Unit)
Common Questions
What is a BTU?
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, and it measures heating and cooling power. The higher the BTU number, the more air a system can heat or cool. A 12,000 BTU mini split comfortably handles a typical bedroom or garage.
How many BTUs does my room need?
A quick square-footage calculation usually points you in the right direction, but ceiling height, insulation, and how many windows the room has all shift the number. A load calculation works those factors in instead of guessing from floor area alone.
What happens when the BTU size is wrong for the space?
Undersized equipment runs constantly and still falls behind. Oversized equipment cycles on and off without running long enough to properly control humidity, which is where short cycling comes from. Matching capacity to the room avoids both problems.
